Congressional Republicans know exactly what they’re doing with the SAVE America Act

Four women cast ballots at voting booths with an American flag in the background.

Representative Chip Roy just admitted what the SAVE America Act is designed to do.

Roy is the lead sponsor of the "SAVE America Act" – the national "Show Your Papers" mandate that would force millions of United States citizens to jump through numerous bureaucratic hoops just to register to vote. Publicly, he’s dismissed concerns about the bill as "political theater."

But in a leaked video from a private meeting held just last month, Roy confessed the truth: his own chief of staff is currently struggling to navigate some of the very identification hurdles his bill would mandate nationwide. He described his own chief of staff going to the DMV twice and dealing with a stack of paperwork just to prove who she is. That is the system he wants to impose on every voter in the country just so they can register to vote.[1]

The "hoops" Roy mentioned are a direct attack on the roughly 69 million married women in the United States who have changed their names. Under his bill, an original birth certificate isn’t enough. If the name on your document doesn't match your current ID, you have to produce marriage licenses and secondary paperwork just to prove you are who you say you are.

Trans voters and young people will also face similar discriminatory barriers.

The most galling part? After detailing his own staffer’s struggle, Roy told the room there are "no barriers at all" for women. He is knowingly building a system designed to disenfranchise any voter who doesn't fit MAGA’s narrow view of who should be allowed to vote.

Chip Roy’s own staff is struggling to jump through his "hoops." We can’t let him force those same hurdles on every woman in the United States.

Because of pressure from advocates like you, the Senate is already beginning to fracture. Senator Lisa Murkowski has already questioned the effects of this bill on the Senate floor, and GOP leadership is admitting they are short of the 60 votes they need to clear a filibuster.

Chip Roy just gave us the evidence we need to mobilize the opposition. At People For, we are moving fast to ensure this hypocrisy is front-and-center as we lobby the Senate and organize the public to protect the ballot box.

Let’s turn his admission into a total defeat for MAGA’s anti-voting agenda.
