Washington, DC - In response to the nearly unanimous rejection by House Democrats of the Republican scheme to amend the Constitution to freeze the number of Supreme Court justices at 9, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“Yesterday was a watershed moment for Supreme Court reform. Democrats understand that reform is necessary, and that no proposal is off the table. In contrast, House Republicans are willing to permanently surrender congressional power to expand the Court in order to maintain a status quo that serves Donald Trump’s interests, but not the American people’s. Today’s extraordinary vote shows that Democrats understand the stakes. When Americans cast their votes in the midterm elections, they will know which party is on their side.”
