Washington, DC — In response to the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision reaffirming the Constitution’s guarantee of citizenship to those who are born here, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“Today, Donald Trump failed in one of his most audacious abuses of power—his attempt to rewrite the Constitution and redefine citizenship by Executive Order. The Fourteenth Amendment means what it says. If you are born here, you are a citizen: You are not an outsider. You are part of us.
It is a good thing that the Court rejected Trump’s unconstitutional decree. But this case should never have gotten this far. Every lower court ruled the same way. The Supreme Court should simply have affirmed them without opinion or oral argument. Just by accepting the case and taking Trump’s arguments seriously – let alone the 4 votes for Trump’s position on the constitutional issue – sends a terrifying signal to us all: No one is safe.”
