Joel Webbon, a racist, antisemitic, and deeply misogynistic Christian nationalist Texas-based pastor, used a recent episode of his Right Response Ministries podcast to call for Tyler Robinson, the man accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk, to be public executed on national television after he is found guilty.
Webbon asserted that if a capital crime is committed against a "public national figure," then the perpetrator should be subject to a capital punishment that likewise takes place on national public level.
"It needs to be proportional justice; it needs to be fair justice—there's a fair trial; it needs to be swift justice—not delayed; and if it's a public national crime, like the case of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, then that justice should be carried out publicly," Webbon proclaimed. "What do I mean? I'll speak in no uncertain terms: I believe that Charlie Kirk's murderer should be put to death and that his execution should be publicly, nationally televised."
"I do think that execution, that capital punishment for a capital crime with a national level crime, that justice should be carried out nationally and publicly where everyone is able to witness it if they so desire," he added.
"It's good for the public to see if they so desire," Webbon asserted. "But more importantly, arguably, it is good for others who have murderous hearts, who may be thinking of carrying out wicked deeds against conservatives, against Christians, it's good for them to see."
This view is unsurprising given that Webbon is an unapologetic fascist who thinks that this country must be governed by a Christian dictator that will “rule with an iron fist” and force everyone to, at the very least, “pretend to be Christian.”
Under his preferred form of Christian nationalist theocracy, Webbon wants to see the Apostles’ Creed added to the Constitution; abortion, pornography, no-fault divorce, in vitro fertilization, and birth control outlawed; non-Christians kept out of his neighborhood and out of public office; Catholics relegated to second-class citizenship; immigrants shot for trying to enter the country; adulterers put to death; women banned from voting and publicly executed for making false claims of sexual assault; and the government used to "absolutely terrorize" his political enemies.
In 2023, Webbon was among the contributors to a document called “The Statement on Christian Nationalism and the Gospel.” Drafted by Christian nationalists like Oklahoma state Sen. Dusty Deevers, former Trump administration official William Wolfe, and others, the document declared that the United States must formally “acknowledge the Lordship of Christ” in all its laws, “abolish abortion,” outlaw marriage equality, and “recapture our national sovereignty from godless, global entities who present a grave threat to civilization.” Wolfe is a close associate of OMB Director Russ Vought, a proponent of Christian nationalism who declared his desire to put federal bureaucrats "in trauma."
In addition to serving as pastor at Covenant Bible Church in Texas, Webbon is also the founder of Right Response Ministries, through which he organizes events like the “Christ Is King: How To Defeat Trashworld” conference that featured a variety of far-right Christian nationalist activists like Deevers, Steve Deace, Stephen Wolfe, Auron MacIntyre, Andrew Isker, and others.
