Joel Webbon Hopes The World Will Soon Learn To 'Humanize' Hitler

Joel Webbon

Far-right pastor Joel Webbon is an unapologetic Christian nationalist and theocratic fascist who believes that the American people are too degenerate, stupid, and cowardly to abide by the Constitution and must therefore be governed by a Christian dictator. This dictator, Webbon believes, must “rule with an iron fist” and force everyone to, at the very least, “pretend to be Christian.”

Under his preferred form of Christian nationalist theocracy, Webbon wants to see the Apostles’ Creed added to the Constitution; abortion, pornography, no-fault divorce, in vitro fertilization, and birth control outlawed; non-Christians kept out of his neighborhood and out of public office; Catholics relegated to second-class citizenship; immigrants shot for trying to enter the country; adulterers put to death; women banned from voting and publicly executed for making false claims of sexual assault; and the government used to "absolutely terrorize" his political enemies.

Fully aware that promoting these sorts of views gets him labeled as a Nazi, Webbon appeared on "The J. Burden Show" last week where he voiced his hope that someday soon, people will be able to "get over Hitler" and learn to "humanize" the German dictator so that Webbon's own political agenda of authoritarian nationalism and patriarchy won't appear so radical.

"Why can't we have nice things in the west like tradition and nationalism and a love for our people?" Webbon asked. "Why can't we have America First? Why can't we have these kinds of things? And of course the answer is because of the Austrian painter with a funny mustache."

"Why can't we have those basic thoughts and beliefs?" he continued. "Because of an Austrian painter who might, depending on your World War II history, might have been a little overly zealous."

Saying that he doesn't necessarily feel that "Hitler has to be lionized," Webbon does think that Hitler "he needs to be humanized," hoping that the world can eventually "just come to a place where you move from demonizing someone, not to lionizing, but to humanizing."

"When we do history and we try to do it objectively, we have to take our emotions out of the equation and our personal biases and so I honestly I think it's just a matter of time," Webbon said. "I think we're seeing this happening in real time right now. Like, we're getting to that 80-year mark and history seems to kind of happen in 80-year cycles. Whether it's the War for Independence and then skip forward about 80 years [to the] Civil War, skip forward about 80 years [to] World War II, skip forward about 80 years and here we are today."

Webbon claimed that it usually takes about two generations for a society to overcome the "personal biases" of the people who lived through an event in order to be "able to look at the past with more objectivity."

"I'm hopeful not for a Third Reich renaissance because I think there really were atrocities that I don't want to see repeated," Webbon said. "I'm not wanting to lionize Hitler or have some kind of Third Reich renaissance but I am very hopeful that we could get over Hitler; not obsess about him, but get over Hitler to where we're able to humanize him. Continue to name whatever was truly wicked but also be able to see there's probably some reasons why people are looking to Weimar Germany and seeing the parallels and these kinds of things."

"Why can we not have nice things in the west?" Webbon reiterated. "Because of in large part the post-war consensus and the 'never again' mentality and people attributing certain atrocities of authoritarian figures to the emphasis towards tradition, nationalism, patriarchy."

Joel Webbon is closely associated with influential MAGA-world figures. He was a contributor to “The Statement on Christian Nationalism and the Gospel” along with Christian nationalist William Wolfe, an associate of OMB Director Russ Vought, whose Center for Renewing America viewed the promotion of Christian nationalism as a top priority for a second Trump administration. Webbon is one of the misogynist “theobros” connected to the far-right slavery-apologist pastor Doug Wilson, whose Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches is planting a new congregation in Washington, D.C. to take advantage of their ties to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and “calibrate” the Christians in the Trump administration.
