Earlier this month, racist, antisemitic, and deeply misogynistic theocratic fascist pastor Joel Webbon predicted that he and others in the far-right Christian nationalist movement will "take over the GOP" by 2032.
Were this to actually happen, it would be rather alarming given that Webbon has openly declared that he wants to see the Apostles’ Creed added to the Constitution; abortion, pornography, no-fault divorce, in vitro fertilization, and birth control outlawed; non-Christians kept out of his neighborhood and out of public office; Catholics relegated to second-class citizenship; immigrants shot for trying to enter the country; adulterers put to death; and women banned from voting and publicly executed for making false claims of sexual assault.
Given his ambitions, it is worth noting that Webbon, who has made no secret of his desire to see "virtuous, ambitious, masculine men" obtain political power and then "forcefully take away from the people" their rights, said during a recent podcast that the only hope for America is "less freedom."
Believing that American political and social culture is in disarray and will inevitably collapse, Webbon declared that people must realize that "old American ideals" no longer apply.
"There was a time where I would have said I was a conservative," Webbon said. "Then there was a time it's like, 'I'm a traditionalist. I don't want to conserve the status quo; I want to get back to the roots.' But then there's also something to be said for you have to move forward."
"When we come out on the other side, whatever that looks like," he continued, "I think there are some basic principles that are inevitable, and one of them is going to be less freedom."
"One thing that we did in the West is we exalted liberty above virtue," Webbon claimed. "Freedom just for the sake of freedom is not virtuous. It's not commendable. So just because we can doesn't mean we should. Even when I think of freedom of speech, like if a leftist is bringing me before a judge, I'm going to appeal to the First Amendment all day long and the Constitution, but that's because I know that what I'm saying is right and I know that they're wicked. That's what I'll do in practice, but in theory, I don't think you should be able to say whatever you want."
In 2023, Webbon was among the contributors to a document called “The Statement on Christian Nationalism and the Gospel.” Drafted by Christian nationalists like Oklahoma state Sen. Dusty Deevers, former Trump administration official William Wolfe, and others, the document declared that the United States must formally “acknowledge the Lordship of Christ” in all its laws, “abolish abortion,” outlaw marriage equality, and “recapture our national sovereignty from godless, global entities who present a grave threat to civilization.” Wolfe was a close associate of OMB Director Russ Vought, a proponent of Christian nationalism who declared his desire to put federal bureaucrats "in trauma."
