Ed Martin is a right-wing activist long associated with the late Phyllis Schlafly. In early 2025 he served as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, where he led ideological purges and engaged in ethically dubious activity. After Martin's record and energetic support for Jan. 6 insurrectionists led to bipartisan opposition that prevented his confirmation, Trump gave him a job in the Justice Department that did not require Senate approval.
