Mark Olson, who claims to be “a former LGBT activist” turned conservative, is calling on abortion rights opponents to embrace his plan to recriminalize abortion by launching a convention of states to amend the U.S. Constitution and overturn Roe v. Wade.
To increase the appeal of his idea, Olson is dubbing it the “Reagan Plan.” Although as governor of California, Ronald Reagan signed a bill legalizing abortion in certain cases, he ultimately endorsed a constitutional amendment to ban abortion.
Olson offers a video detailing his plan on his website, while warning that anti-choice groups are wary of his plan only “because if abortion ended they would lose their power within the Republican Party.”
The Reagan Plan will achieve the necessary number of pro-life state legislative majorities in order to amend the U.S. Constitution to abolish abortion. President Reagan got to within two states of achieving this, yet pro-life never mobilized behind Reagan's efforts.
Available at www.ReaganPlan.com is a thirty-page paper that addresses conservative critics of an Article V Convention. "Apparently these critics have not actually read the words of the founding fathers. If it was good enough for Ronald Reagan, it is good enough for me," says Olson.
Olson identifies the biggest challenge to moving forward with Reagan's vision is getting Pro-Life on board. Olson admits, "I've had several pro-life leaders communicate to me that the Reagan Plan would work, but that they will not fund it because if abortion ended they would lose their power within the Republican Party. Due to electoral advantages from 2010 redistricting, our window to act on this is quickly closing."
