For three days last week, right-wing activists and Republican political operatives gathered in Washington, D.C., for the annual Road to Majority conference. Hosted by the Faith and Freedom Coalition, a religious-right voter mobilization organization founded by longtime conservative Christian activist Ralph Reed, the event featured a variety of Christian nationalist speakers, GOP elected officials, and members of the Trump administration, as well as President Donald Trump himself.
While the various speakers tried desperately to energize the audience by reminiscing about all of the supposedly amazing things Trump and the GOP have accomplished during their the last two years in power, the underlying message of the event was one of fear about what will happen if Democrats gain control of Congress in the upcoming midterms.
That fear was on full display in the remarks Reed delivered to close out the event at Saturday night's gala.
"In 130 days, the American people are going to go to the polls in what I really believe is the most important midterm election of our lifetimes," Reed said. "I don't know where you were on election day in 2024, but I know where I was: in Palm Beach getting ready to go to what I hoped would be a victory party and I was on my knees crying out to God, asking him to have mercy on our nation. And boy, did he ever."
"But I am telling you, this election is different," Reed warned. "They are coming, and they are coming in the biggest numbers we have ever seen in a midterm election, and they are coming with unlimited resources. Unlimited. Do you know, as we gather here tonight, that 4 million more Democrats have voted in primaries than Republicans? 12.6 million Democrats, 8.6 million Republicans. In my home state of Georgia, more Democrats than Republicans voted in a gubernatorial primary for the first time in 24 years and they didn't even have a contest. They didn't really even have a competitive primary. That's an indication of what's coming. So we need to leave here and rededicate ourselves that we will work even harder than we did in 2024 because if we don't, they will win the House, they will win the Senate, and the Trump presidency will be over after two years. They will investigate him. They will impeach him. Subpoenas will fly in this city like heat-seeking missiles."
"We have a big job in front of us," Reed declared somberly.
