Tony Saurez Says DC Is 'Almost Like A War Zone'

Tony Saurez

When President Donald Trump arbitrarily declared "a crime emergency in the District of Columbia" in order to justify taking over the local police department, he did so by predictably exaggerating the crime rates in the district.

Just as predictably, Republicans members of Congress and MAGA activists came rushing to Trump's defense by painting DC as a crime-ridden cesspool in need of federal intervention.

On Saturday, MAGA pastor Tony Saurez appeared on the "FlashPoint" program, where he praised Trump for seizing control of DC by claiming that "it's almost like a war zone."

"I remember coming out of the White House during the Republican Convention in 2020," Saurez said. "We walk out of the White House—Pastor Sam [Rodriguez], myself, Eric Metaxas, my wife—and we were being spit at, things were being thrown at us right out of the White House. And law enforcement wasn't even able to handle the amount of crime. I mean, we were in fear of our lives that night."

"If somebody's watching and you've never been to DC or maybe there's a naysayer that says, 'You all are just blowing smoke, you're covering other things up'; no, it's almost like a war zone there," Saurez continued. "It's dangerous. So this is a wonderful, wonderful thing that's developed and we thank the Lord and President Trump for it."

Saurez was talking about the night in August 2020 when he was in the audience as Trump accepted the Republican nomination for president with a speech on the White House lawn. Upon leaving, Saurez and other guests were met by protesters who jeered, booed, and yelled at them, but they were able to depart largely without incident.

But, ironically, there was one actual assault that took place that night, and that came courtesy of Eric Metaxas, whom Saurez mentioned leaving the White House with, who sucker punched a protester for chanting, "Fuck you, fuck Trump."
