For decades, self-proclaimed "Constitution Coach" Rick Green has hosted a daily radio program with Christian nationalist pseudo-historians David and Tim Barton. Day in and day out, the trio use their "The WallBuilders Show" broadcast and various speaking engagements to spread demonstrably false claims about the Founding Fathers, the Founding Era, and the founding of the United States to bolster their modern-day Christian nationalist political agenda.
Thus, it came as a bit of a surprise to hear Green use a recent program to decry those who "twist the facts" and lie for political gain while holding up WallBuilders as an example of an organization that would never do such a thing.
"The approach that WallBuilders has always had—and David, you instilled this in us a long time ago—you teach the good, the bad and the ugly," Green declared. "You keep that intellectual honesty so that people, first of all, can trust that when we bring stuff to them, we've resourced it that well, we've researched it, we're going to original documents; we're not just spinning so that it sounds best for us."
"The lack of that in the quote unquote political world the last few years," he continued, "to where you don't have that kind of honorable civil discourse [and] instead it's whatever it takes to win, and twisting the facts to get what you want, and even lying about things, has created a massive amount of distrust in our institutions to where we literally don't believe anything we hear from the politicians or from the media."
The irony of Green complaining about political activists who spin, lie, and twist the facts in an effort to promote their agenda was not lost on Right Wing Watch, which has spent decades chronicling the way Green and the Bartons do precisely that with just about every program they host and every speech they give.
