The MAGA movement has found its next target, and they aren’t waiting for the midterms to start the purge.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune just announced that he is bringing the so-called "SAVE America Act" to the Senate floor next week. This isn't about election integrity – it’s a calculated attempt to disenfranchise millions of students, women, and people of color by imposing extreme proof-of-citizenship requirements and ending mail-in balloting.
Donald Trump has made this his "number one priority," even threatening to not sign any piece of legislation that reaches his desk until this bill passes.
Under intense pressure from Trump, Senator John Cornyn of Texas, who spent years posturing as a "defender of the Senate," just reversed his lifelong support for the filibuster. Why? Because he is desperate for Trump’s endorsement in a run-off election and is willing to take a "wrecking ball" to Senate rules if it means helping MAGA extremists capture our elections.
The reality is that noncitizen voting in the United States is already illegal and vanishingly rare. This bill is a solution in search of a problem, designed specifically to create hurdles for legitimate voters. By requiring states to cross-check rolls with federal databases and demanding specific photo IDs, they are building a fence around the ballot box.
Trump is already talking about "nationalizing" our elections and banning mail-in ballots. If we don’t stop this bill in the Senate next week, we are looking at a future where the MAGA movement decides who gets to participate in our democracy.
With a slim Republican majority, the pressure on moderate-leaning members and the defense of the 60-vote threshold are the only things standing between us and a radical attack on our democracy.
