Washington, DC – In honor of Black History Month, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:

This month, we celebrate and reflect on the rich history of Black Americans. At a time in our country when division is high and the forces of fascism attempt to divide us even further, we must remember our history: the tragedies of our past, the battles we have won, and the work we must continue to do. We must take the lessons of the past and apply them to our collective future.

Honoring Black History means recognizing both how far we’ve come and how far we have yet to go. In a nation where federal agents run amok, terrifying and disappearing our fellow Americans, and the rich and powerful stack the system against everyday folks, we take this time to remember that we’ve fought oppression before, and we have overcome. While we still face immense trials as a nation, this month serves as a reminder and gives us hope that together we can and will persevere.
