Washington, DC – In response to today’s Supreme Court decision which takes away federal courts’ ability to issue nationwide injunctions in the face of blatantly illegal government actions, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“Each branch of government is meant to protect its own powers as a check on the other branches. Our freedom depends on it. Today, six far-right justices abdicated their responsibility to protect the courts’ power to defend the American people from tyranny. When we have a president repeatedly flaunting the law, limiting the ability of the courts to provide redress for the people is unthinkable. We’re left with an Executive branch that ignores the law whenever it chooses and a judiciary hamstrung by the highest court in the land. At the same time, this decision fails to address the harm inflicted on every child and family whose citizenship remains in question. The American people deserve better than justices who allow Trump to break the law and then blame district courts for attempting to completely enjoin unlawful policies. We must continue fighting for fair courts that have both the willingness and ability to stand up to Trump and his unlawful actions.
