People For the American Way Responds to Trump's Targeting of James Comey and the Open Society Foundations
Washington, DC -- In response to President Trump’s “domestic terrorism” executive order and the Trump-ordered indictment of former FBI director James Comey, as well as the impending investigation of the Open Society Foundations, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“These latest actions expand President Trump’s campaign to weaponize the entire federal government against anyone who stands in the way of his destructive agenda. Directing law enforcement to target peaceful foundations and nonprofits threatens vital services and resources that our communities rely on every day. Ordering the Justice Department to prosecute those who have challenged him undermines freedom of speech and all our democratic freedoms.
“This isn’t just about one man’s vendetta. Dismantling our constitutional checks and balances will make it easier for future presidents to abuse their power. The Trump administration is making America less fair, less free, and vastly less great. People of conscience and good will must reject our nation’s perilous descent into authoritarianism.”
