WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to Donald Trump's nomination of Cory Wilson for a seat on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, People For the American Way Executive Vice President for Policy and Program Marge Baker released the following statement:

"When the Senate returns it must focus its full energy on helping Americans survive the coronavirus crisis, not on advancing Donald Trump's political agenda by confirming more ideological extremists like Cory Wilson to the federal bench. It is alarming that in the current environment, the administration would choose to advance this nominee, whose record shows his hostility to accessible health care and who has called the ACA 'perverse' and 'illegitimate.' At the same time, it is no accident that a voting-rights opponent like Wilson is being offered a seat on the Fifth Circuit, where Republican efforts to suppress the vote are ongoing. Trump and Republicans are pinning their election hopes on preventing many Americans from voting and on vanquishing court challenges to voter suppression, especially in southern states. This is unacceptable."
